Terracotta is a porous material, meaning it has tiny, invisible holes that allow water to slowly seep through. This property is used by placing an unglazed terracotta container (such as a pot or amphora) filled with water directly into the soil. Once sealed at the top to prevent evaporation or insects, the container releases water slowly through its pores, but only when the surrounding soil is dry. The soil’s moisture regulates the flow automatically: if the soil is dry, water is released; if it’s moist, the flow stops. This process is driven by osmosis and capillary tension between the water in the pot and the surrounding soil. It allows for up to 70% water savings compared to traditional irrigation, directs water straight to the roots without surface evaporation, provides constant and automatic watering, and helps prevent plant diseases by keeping the leaves dry.
